Related representatives of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) visited the Public Vocational Training Center for Modern Architectural Technology in Guangzhou on the afternoon of October 30, including leadership of the School of Architecture, Dean Lu Qi and Secretary Chen Lei; personnel in charge of the Department of Students Affairs; and representative teachers, where they also attended the signing and opening ceremonies of extra-curricular practical teaching bases. All students majoring in Architecture from the Class of 2023 participated in the event, and learned practical lessons on architectural construction and construction equipment.

Public Vocational Training Center for Modern Architectural Technology is located in Conghua District, Guangzhou, which covers an area of about 733 acre (110 mu) whose gross floor area reach around 40,000m². It is a national productive training bases for constructional engineering with its total investment being 40 million yuan, which is also included in the first batch of leading practical training bases for digitization and intelligence. Moreover, the center is approved to be the China Training Base for concrete construction project in the 45th and 46th WorldSkills Competition by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the People’s Republic of China; a national education and training center for “double qualified teacher” on technologies of construction engineering (cluster) by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and a pilot unit of occupational skill testing for the housing and urban-rural construction industry by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China. Guangzhou City Construction College is responsible for the training center.

Representatives extended a warm welcome to the GCUT delegation, including director of the Department of Teaching Affairs of Guangzhou City Construction College, Wang Ping; deputy director of the Department of Teaching Affairs of Guangzhou City Construction College, Pan Dan; vice dean of the School of Construction Engineering, Gao Ce; and vice dean of Guangdong Jingtong City Construction Vocational Training College (Training Center). Pan Dan appreciated the support of GCUT’s School of Architecture in carrying out practical teaching activities at the opening ceremony. Pan hoped that they could seek more opportunities in cooperation and exchanges in the future drawing on their jointly building of practical teaching base. Lu Qi pointed out that practical teaching served as an important part of architectural education while looking back on the cooperation between the two sides in the past six years. He put forward that students could have a better understanding of the construction, equipment and knowledge about structure combining theory with skills, through which they will learn valuable lessons while enhancing their teamwork spirits. In this way, they could lay a solid foundation for their career in the future. Then, Lu Qi signed a contract with Wang Ping, and held the opening ceremony of the “Practical Teaching Base of Guangzhou City University of Technology”.

Associate Professor Duo Duo, who is in charge of GCUT’s practical training courses of the School of Architecture, shared her views that architectural construction was a deliberate design of architectural designs originated from ideation sessions, which is a significant part of the construction process. It is a discipline that studies the constitution of buildings, theories of combing each part and methods of construction, whose application covers all constituents of a building and the whole process of construction. Such things cannot be seen after the completion of a building, which is an existing difficulty of schools of architecture of China’s universities regarding the teaching of architectural construction for a long time. The building of practical teaching base helps to provide an approach for students to have an overall understanding of every details of architectural construction, thus stimulating their interests in learning and passion for their major. It serves as an important achievement of the School of Architecture in promoting integration between industry and education.

It is known that the Training Center of Guangdong Jingtong City Construction Vocational Training College can carry out experimental and practical training projects committed to the construction principle of “employment-orientation, cooperation between university and enterprises, and integration between industry and education”, including the demonstration of preventive and protective foundation pit engineering for safety education, simulated building of a construction (foundation engineering), simulated building of a construction (main and decoration works), simulated building of a construction (roofing works) as well as hands-on experience of the implementation of construction.

The School of Architecture requires that its students should further their understanding and mastering of professional knowledge such as architectural structures, architectural construction, materials and equipment, construction technologies and installation methods regarding its practical lessons on architectural construction and construction equipment. Therefore, students can learn construction technologies and design methods of every stage from building foundation to roofing works. Such practical training deepens students’ understanding of the whole process from engineering design, construction to installation, which helps to lay a solid foundation for their internship courses on becoming an architect.
