Located in one of the central cities of Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area, namely, Guangzhou, Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) is formerly named as Guangzhou Automobile College of South China University of Technology founded in 2005. In 2011, it was approved to be a bachelor’s degree conferring institution. It was renamed as Guangzhou College of South China University of Technology (GCU) in the same year. In 2021, it was approved to upgrade as a private undergraduate university. GCUT has 16 schools with 46 majors of bachelor’s degree, covering 6 disciplines including Sciences, Engineering, Economics, Management Science, Literature and Arts. There are more than 22,000 full time students in the university.
Covering an area of 1,168,700 square meters, the total floor area of school building reaches 521,600 square meters. The value of teaching instruments and equipment totaled 176 million yuan. The number of paper books collected in the library is 2,059,300 while that of E-books reaches 1 million. There are 14 experimental centers (including 5 basic experimental centers and 9 specialized ones) as well as 271 laboratories. 664 employment & internship bases and 1,140 practical teaching bases have been set up. 5G network has covered the whole university.
Committed to the strategy of “strengthening the university through talent cultivation”, GCUT has formed a high quality facility with full-time teachers as the majority and part-time teachers as the supply since it took measures such as “Double-hundred Project” and forming of disciplinary teams. The number of high-end talents at provincial and above levels is around 30, including teachers enjoying special government allowances of the State Council, outstanding teachers and workers in education circles.
Concentrating on the cultivation of application-oriented talents, GCUT has carried out industry-university-research collaboration with a batch of well-known enterprises including Sugon, Guangdong Agricultural Design and Research Institute, UNIPRES Guangzhou and Guangzhou Development Group Incorporated. GCUT has cultivated nearly 60,000 high-quality application-oriented talents while jointly trained postgraduates exceeding 70. It has 2 provincial key disciplines, 6 provincial first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites and 25 first-class undergraduate courses. Furthermore, there is 1 provincial platform for collaboration in joint training, 1 provincial demonstration industrial college, 3 provincial projects of industry-education integration institutes. Meanwhile, there are 7 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national extra-curricular practice base and 9 provincial extra-curricular practice bases for college students. 3 provincial teaching achievement awards were approved.
Students of GCUT have won around 100 international awards, nearly 400 national awards and about 1,000 provincial awards in various kinds of innovation and entrepreneurship competitions since 2018. Among these awards, 2 silver awards of China International College Students' Innovation Competition, 2 gold awards and 5 silver awards of provincial competitions won. In 2023 “Challenge Cup” National Extra-curricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition for College Students, 2 second prizes and 1third prize at national level as well as 6 grand prizes and 11 first prizes of provincial competitions were awarded, which marked the first time GCUT won the provincial “Champion Cup”. Moreover, the second prize of 2023 China University Robot Competition (ROBOCON) and the first prize of 2023 Shell ECO-Marathon (China) were awarded.
GCUT attaches great importance to scientific research and strives to enhance its delivery of social services. 4 existing municipal-level scientific research platforms of GCUT concentrate on scientific and technological innovation and the industrialization of platform construction with its focus on applied research and the commercialization of achievements, based on which its scientific research has been carried out. Engineering Research Institute has been founded to support the innovation platform for scientific research as well as service platform for industrial technology, which enables it to came to fruition with a batch of achievements in high quality scientific research. In the past five years, 382 scientific research projects of different types of GCUT were approved with actual funds of scientific research projects accumulated to be 64.06 million yuan, 50 among which were longitudinal research projects. 1,482 papers have been published, 713 among which were published at above - CSTPCD - level journals. 422 among 706 patents applied were invention patents while 24 were PCT international patents; the number of granted patents is 636, 120 among which were invention patents. The number of patents applied and granted of GCUT tops among private universities in Guangdong province.
Centered around the “Belt and Road Initiative” and requirements of talents in Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area, GCUT promotes internationalization of higher education, cultivating around 70 full-time international students of bachelor’s degree. GCUT has established cooperation with high level universities and institutions of developed countries with mature education systems such as Britain, Canada and France as well as that of Taiwan, China in succession to carry out diversified cooperation. It also takes an active part in promoting international professional accreditation, with 3 majors accredited by the IEET and 11 majors certificated by the IACBE, which makes it the first university granted the IACBE accreditation as well as a vice-president unit of the IACBE in Asia.
GCUT was approved to be a provincial demonstration university of innovation and entrepreneurship for college students, a supporting unit for the National Natural Science Foundation and a provincial postdoctoral workstation in succession. It ranks Top 30 nationwide in several third-party ranking agencies such as Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, Cuaa Net and WU Rankings. Furthermore, GCUT has ranked the seventh among private technology universities in China on the Cuaa Net for consecutive years, topping in Guangdong province. It is a six-star outstanding private university in China.
