The first Annual Academic Conference on Industry-University-Research Innovation was hosted by the Professional Committee on Industry-University-Research Cooperation of the Chinese Association of Science of Science and Science &Technology Policy Research and was jointly organized by the School of Business Administration of South China University of Technology and the School of Management of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) in Guangzhou on November 30. Over 190 participants from national well-known universities (such as Jilin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian University of Technology, Zhejiang University, Sun Yat-sen University and South China University of Technology) as well as representatives from the government, scientific research institutions and enterprises attended the conference. President Su Cheng delivered an opening speech on behalf of GCUT, introducing the development history, characteristics of school running and achievements of GCUT.
Themed on “industry-university-research cooperation promotes integrated development of industrial chain and innovation chain”, the annual academic conference aims to explore topics including the integrated path and mechanisms of how industry-university-research cooperation promotes industrial chain and innovation chain, building of industry-university-research cooperation and innovation consortium, enterprise-led industry-university-research cooperation, industry-university-research cooperation and self-dependent innovation of enterprises, industry-university-research cooperation and development of new quality productive forces, industry-university-research cooperation and innovation ecosystem and practical and policy questions.

Researcher Mu Rongping delivered a keynote speech themed on Innovative Development of Industry-University-Research Cooperation: Vision and Thinking of Policies, stressing the significance of building capacities of systems concerning scientific, technological, economic, social and cultural values through exploring theories and practices, periodical feature and policy preferences of innovative development of industry-university-research cooperation. Furthermore, he proposed that it would create a new future for innovation and entrepreneurship if interdisciplinary industry-university-research cooperation could be established.
Researcher Mu Rongping delivered a keynote speech
Professor Cai Li delivered a keynote speech focusing on Entrepreneurship Opportunity Set Driven by Innovation, which exemplified how large-size enterprises could promote the development of the industry through digital transformation and building eco-network drawing on the new energy automobiles of BYD Company. Centering around the definition, features and process models of innovation-driven entrepreneurship, Professor Cai further illustrated the theoretical model of opportunity set of innovation-driven entrepreneurship. Professor Li Yuan pointed out challenges enterprises encountered in terms of the intelligence and coordination of safety of AI technologies. Moreover, Professor Li Yuan put forward the strategic combination of intelligentization of AI technologies and degree of safety as well as capacity building and strategic evolution of AI after discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the imbalanced development of the intelligence and safety of AI. Professor Liu Xielin analyzed the present situation and development bottleneck of industry-university-research cooperation in his speech themed on from Technology-driven to Science-driven Industry-University-Research Cooperation, emphasizing the importance of basic research to industrial innovation and proposing the path of science-based industry-university-research cooperation. Professor Liu stressed that science-based industry-university-research cooperation would serve as a key part of China’s innovation system in the future.
Researcher Hu Zhijian explored how AI introduced reforms of scientific approaches in fields such as physics, chemistry and biology based on the debate over induction and deduction concerning scientific approaches in his speech The Coming of Different Science. Then he further discussed problems brought by different science drawing on case analysis of scientific research. Professor Chen Kaihua pointed out that it would be urgent to accelerate the integrated development of education, science and technology and talent centered around industry demand in his report entitled Promoting the Integrated Development of Education, Science and Technology and Talent Based on Industry Demand. He examined present development, major problems and mechanisms of China’s innovation chain, talent chain and industrial chain while providing solutions to them with concluding experience of other countries. Themed on Progress of Machine Learning Empowering Innovation Research, Professor Sun Yutao analyzed empowering approaches and application scenarios of machine learning in innovative management research while exploring how machine learning changes paradigms, data and forecasting process of innovation research.
Dr. Wang Faping focused on his theme, Key to Success of China’s Top 3 Tech Companies -- the Essence of Science is not Merely Science while the Essence of Technology is not just Industry, from the perspective of enterprise practices. He analyzed the problems including relatively low rate of technology transfer in China and reconstruction of science and technology in the times of AI with vivid cases and detailed data, and proposed a vision of industry-university-research cooperation in the future. Professor Xu Zhi put forward the definition, features and paradigms of AI for Science as the fifth paradigm in science research based on its whole process in his speech entitled Innovative Organizational Change of AI for Science Paradigm, and further discussed the transformation of scientific research organizations from workshop to platform in the times of AI, influences of AI to industry-university-research cooperation as well as to innovation culture and spirits.
The annual conference also held a parallel forum on Business Administration Teaching and Seminar of Virtual Department on December 1. The parallel forum was hosted by Deputy Dean Wei Wei of GCUT’s School of Management. Associate Professor Li Feifei from Shandong Normal University, Professor Li Muchun and Professor Zhou Yuhong from South China University of Technology delivered speeches entitled Competitions and Teaching Promote Each Other Empowered by Innovation -- Growth in Teaching of Young Teachers, Values Education through Courses, Integration between Industry and Education and Teaching Reforms, as well as Entrepreneurship and Innovation Education of World-Class Universities.
The annual conference comprehensive reveals the latest research achievements and practical experience of how industry-university-research cooperation promotes the integrated development of industrial chain and innovation chain through the discussion among professionals and scholars, thus providing a quality academic exchange platform for professional and scholars in the field of industry-university-research cooperation. Participants believed that industry-university-research cooperation would serve as an important part in advancing scientific and technological innovation and deep integration of industrial innovation, and a significant approach to achieving sci-tech self-reliance and self-strengthening at higher levels. Guided by the Chinese Association of Science of Science and Science &Technology Policy Research, the Professional Committee on Industry-University-Research Cooperation will carry out scientific and technological services and decision-making consultations centered around industry-university-research cooperation in the future, thus serving national strategies and economic and social development.
The holdings of academic annual conference and its parallel forum has built a platform for teachers from GCUT’s School of Management to communicate and exchange with professionals. The School of Management will keep considering and exploring professional knowledge while organizing various academic lectures to enhance its teachers’ teaching capacity and academic literacy.
