Related representatives of Guangzhou City University of Technology (GCUT) participated in the third ASEAN-China Education Expo in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam from December 3 to 10, including Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation and Dean of the International Business School An Ran, Deputy Secretary of CPC GCUT International Business School Committee Liang Weitao and related personnel from the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation. They introduced GCUT’s characteristic majors and their advantages while explaining its enrollment policy of international students to participants through the expo as well as visiting local universities, thus enabling foreign teachers and students to deepen their understanding of GCUT’s principles of school running, its advantages and characteristics. Moreover, they have reached a consensus on establishing cooperation in school running with a local university.

GCUT attracted abundant local students to consult in three expos

In expos held in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, the stand set by GCUT attracted several hundred students from the ASEAN countries who hope to study abroad. The delegation of GCUT expounded its achievements in international education, distinctive major setting, favorable campus environment, tuition fees for international students, scholarships and its application to every student and parent coming for knowing more information with enthusiasm. With frequent interaction, they also gave answers to each question asked by these students.

GCUT has left a great impression on students from the ASEAN countries since it integrates its publicity with Chinese characteristics, elements of Guangzhou and features of the university. Tailor-made USB flash disks with Chinese knots and name of the university were sent as souvenirs to those who tended to study at GCUT, which not only include its English-version promotion video, but carry profound Chinese culture. Such promotion integrates elements of Guangzhou, revealing the beauty of the city, thus helping to kindle their curiosity and aspiration of Guangzhou. Additionally, GCUT printed extra university brochures that would be sent along with each USB flash disk, which ensures that every student can get to know about its characteristics and advantages of school running in a comprehensive way.

Present students are enthusiastic about knowing more of GCUT, such as academic curriculum, campus life, future employment and cultural exchanges. A senior high school student from Vietnam desired to study in China since she is keen about China’s culture. Through her school does not provide Chinese courses, she has learned Chinese for three months herself, thus she is able to communicate with others in Chinese. Dean An Ran encouraged her to keep learning Chinese in order to pass the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), then she could apply for GCUT’s admission. Another senior high school student from who adores Chinese has planned to study in China, however, he hasn’t decided on choosing which major. Liang Weitao suggested that he could consider GCUT’s majors included in science and engineering disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering and Mechanical Engineering based on Laos’ actual needs for economic development. In this way, he could work in Chinese-funded enterprises in Laos when he graduates in the future, thus contributing to boosting the development of Laos.

There are nearly 200 students from the ASEAN countries leaving their contacts without being asked since they are interested in GCUT’s programs for international students. They aspired to study at GCUT in the future. Such positive feedback proves that GCUT’s achievements in international education are appreciated, which will pave the way for its international cooperation and exchanges in the future.

8 universities from the ASEAN countries expected to seek cooperation with GCUT

The delegation also visited 8 universities during the expo, including Cambodian-Chinese Expatriate School, CamED Business School, Bonamary  University, Souphanouvong University, National University of Laos, Saigon College of Technology and Lac Hong University.

Dean An Ran pointed out that majors provided by CamED Business School are similar with that of GCUT’s International Business School, therefore, they have various opportunities in internationalized cooperation in business studies, such as short-term exchanges and mutual visits between students and mutual exchanges between teachers from both sides as well as “2+2” bachelor’s degree with a Major and a Minor. The delegation also visited classrooms, reading rooms and library of CamED Business School.

Dean An Ran believed that Lac Hong University is also a private university with cultivating application-oriented talents as its goal, thus they share a lot in common, including advantageous disciplines, internship and practice as well as internationalized cooperation, which creates great opportunities for them to cooperate with each other. The signing of Memorandum of Cooperation symbolizes that the cooperation between Lac Hong University and GCUT has been promoted to a new stage.

The delegation has better understood the latest development and requirements of education field in the ASEAN countries through further exchanges with local universities, laying a solid foundation of their future cooperation. They also realized the fact that students from the ASEAN countries are willing to study in China during the visits. The internationalization of education has become an important part in the development of universities as the acceleration of globalization.
